Lingering Ankle Sprain

Ankle sprains occur when a twist in the ankle joint happens. If swelling and extreme pain occurs after the twist then a sprain to the ankle has most likely occurred. Even though ankle sprains are common, they are not always minor injuries. If your ankle does not heal appropriately it can produce Chronic Lateral Ankle Pain which is a recurring or chronic pain in the ankle.

Let’s take a look at some of the symptoms:

  • Pain, usually on the outer part of your ankle. In some cases, the pain is a constant dull ache.
  • Difficulty walking on uneven ground or in high heels.
  • A feeling of “giving away.”
  • Swelling.
  • Stiffness.
  • Tenderness.
  • Repeated ankle sprains.

When you sprain your ankle, the connecting tissue between the bones is stretched or torn. Without the proper healing, the ligaments and surrounding muscles may remain weak causing recurrent instability. As a result of this, you may experience additional ankle injuries.
